Hilling and Measuring–June 7, 2012

Nora (fifth grade) measured the soil temp as 68° and the air as 65° with the sky being cloudy and feeling warm. After playing an intense game of tag, we walked to the front of the library with Wendy Willard who had asked if any of the kids wanted to dig up some baby pine trees and take them home. There were many takers.

In the garden we pulled more weeds and the radishes that were going to seed. The kids hilled up soil around the potato plants and planted the corn that was outgrowing the tray. Anna brought a Sunflower Growing Chart to measure the 12 sunflowers and each plant was measured. So far it looks like the tallest ones are: #2 at 11″, #6 at 10″ and #10 at 9.4″. A lot of watering was done as well.

  • pull weeds and any plants going to seed
  • hill potato plants
  • plant corn next to beans and potatoes
  • measure sunflowers
  • water

Radishes Smell Like the Ocean–May 24, 2012

Nico from first grade noted that the weather was warm and sunny with the soil temperature being 75° and the air temperature registered at 71°. In the garden we planted potatoes with at least three eyes (facing up in the hole) and beans. Just outside the garden fence a group worked with Jack planting the sunflower seedlings in a row and Anna doled out watermelon and pumpkin seeds to plant in a big patch of beautiful soil that she had dropped off earlier. We also harvested radishes, weeded and watered.

Quote of the day: “This radish smells like the ocean.”

  • plant potatoes with the eyes on top
  • plant sunflower seedlings with hollowed out soil around it
  • plant watermelon and pumpkin seeds on a mound about 5″ apart
  • harvest, rinse and taste radishes
  • weed and water

Pulling Weeds and Planting in Trays–May 10, 2012

Sixth grader, Ivy, recorded a 65° soil temperature and a 62° air temp with the weather being sunny and windy. We pulled weeds, harvested radishes and tasted them. In trays, we planted two kinds of sunflowers, zucchini, summer squash, corn, beets and peas in the garden.

Quote of the day: “It needs to be warm for the plants to grow!”

  • pull weeds and harvest radishes
  • in trays plant sunflowers, zucchini, summer squash, corn and beets
  • label and water all trays
  • plant peas in the garden

Prepping and Harvesting–April 26, 2012

Today Olivia (kindergarten) and Paige (grade 2) recorded that the air temperature was 52° with clouds and a cold wind. We started Big Max and Sugar Pie Pumpkin, Watermelon and Cherry Tomato seeds in trays and the children labelled them. These will begin their growth in Dave DeWitt’s greenhouse. Francie and Anna showed the kids how to pick the leaves from last year’s spinach and pull the stems to put into the compost. The untasted basket of spinach was brought to the Truro Central School for Friday’s lunch.

Quote of the day: ” I LOVE this stuff!” (spinach)

  • start pumpkin, watermelon and tomato seeds in trays
  • harvest spinach and compost remaining stems
  • prep bed for planting

Felting Farm Animals–March 7, 2012

Janice Redman led the children in beginning to create a farm by focusing on needle felting wool animals. She started with explaining and demonstrating the use of an armature when making a sculpture. Pipe cleaners could be shaped into the outline of a sheep, pig, chicken or any farm animal and then the raw dyed wool could be wrapped around that. Next the felting needle could be used to adhere the wool to the armature and provide details like eyes and beaks to the animals. Armature free vegetables were created too.
