Four French Films: Echoes of Proust
When the first volume of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time appeared in 1913, it created a sensation. A new way of expressing the mysteries of human emotion had been discovered. These four films, each in its own way, visualize intertwining dramas of complex interior lives. The film will be followed by discussion and refreshments.
L’Atalante
The son of a notorious anarchist, director Jean Vigo had a brief but brilliant career making poetic, lightly surrealist films before his life was cut tragically short by tuberculosis at age twenty-nine.  Like the daring early works of his contemporaries Jean Cocteau and Luis Bunuel, Vigo’s films refused to play by the rules.  L’Atalante is widely regarded as one of cinema’s finest achievements.
