Truro Public Library will be one of three Cape Cod libraries to host a concert on the debut tour of the Cape Cod Classical Roadshow, performed by six award-winning alumni of the popular, long-running public radio show, ‘NPR’s From the Top with Host Christopher O’Riley.’  All three concerts will be free and open to the public.  The program will offer a broad range of composers, musical styles and eras, and instrumentation. Examples include a clarinet quartet and a piano solo by Brahms; a string quartet by Janáček; a clarinet solo by Stravinsky; a viola sonata by Hindemith; a sonata for piano and cello by Beethoven; and a piano quintet by Prokofiev.  The featured performers include: Highland Street, an ensemble composed of Mira Williams, viola; Victoria Pan, violin; Sophie Applbaum, cello; and Greta Myatieva, violin; and Patrick Pan, piano, and Aleksis Martin, clarinet.  The performances—modeled on the ‘From the Top’ format—will be interspersed with brief interviews with each of the performers. MUSICIANS’ BIOGRAPHIES
Members of Highland Street first crossed paths as younger musicians, and are thrilled to reunite as a 2017–2018 New England Conservatory Honors Ensemble. Highland Street is grateful to be coached by Paul Biss, and has played in masterclasses for members of the Parker and Borromeo Quartets, Kim Kashkashian, Lucy Chapman, and Merry Peckham. Previous coaches include Ayano Ninomiya, Kris Tong, and Guy Fishman. Individually, members of Highland Street have excelled in national solo and chamber music competitions, and have honed their chamber music skills at international music festivals. Highland Street is eager to pursue community outreach opportunities to increase the accessibility of chamber music in Boston. The quartet has collaborated on related work with From The Top, Music for Food, The Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and other Boston-area projects. In addition to their upcoming Jordan Hall recital, Highland St. will present a series of concerts in April in Cape Cod in collaboration with From The Top.
Violiar Mira Williams, a student of Kim Kashkashian at the New England Conservatory, is a 2017/2018 NEC Honors Ensemble winner with her quartet. She is 2nd place winner of the 17th and 18th Sphinx Competitions. With her Quartet Lumière, she won the gold medal in the junior division of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (2013). She is a Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award recipient and has performed on NPR’s From the Top in 2013 and 2014. Mira has participated in master classes with Heidi Castleman, Jeffrey Irvine, Roberto Díaz, and Steven Tenenbom.
From Charlotte, North Carolina, Victoria Pan began her studies on the violin at age four. Her past teachers have included David Russell, Weiwei Le, Hyejin Kim, and Ara Gregorian. In 2012, she had the opportunity to solo with the Charlotte Symphony and more recently, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Victoria has attended Kneisel Hall, the Heifetz Institute, and the Taos School of Music. She is currently in her third year at New England Conservatory studying with Miriam Fried.
Cellist Sophie Applbaum studies in the Harvard–NEC dual degree program with Natasha Brofsky. Sophie has performed chamber music in Weill Hall, Merkin Hall, Jordan Hall, in Iceland, and in Italy. She has toured as principal cellist of NEC’s Youth Philharmonic, and performed as concerto soloist with the New Philharmonia, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Newton Symphony, and other Boston-area ensembles. While studying in the NEC Preparatory program, Sophie received prizes from the chamber, string, and orchestral departments. Sophie began her musical studies with Michael Bonner at the Longy School. Summer festivals include Music@Menlo, the Heifetz Institute, National Arts Centre, the Castleman Quartet Program, Indiana Summer String Academy, Orford, and Bowdoin. At Harvard, Sophie studies Social Studies, and currently serves as the Partnerships Director at Y2Y Harvard Square, a youth homeless shelter.
Violinist Greta Myatieva, a native of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan who grew up in Boston, has been a guest soloist with the Waltham Symphony Orchestra and has performed in the violin sections of the Boston Civic Orchestra, Wellesley Symphony, Waltham Symphony, and New World Symphony in Miami. Greta is a winner of the 2017/2018 NEC Honors Ensemble Competition with her quartet. She is a third year undergrad student at New England Conservatory where she is a student of Paul Biss. Prior to her studies at NEC, her teachers have included Peter Zazofsky, Naoko Tanaka, and Mark Lakirovich.
Clarinetist Aleksis Martin, a student at the New England Conservatory, began his music career playing piano at age 5. Switching to clarinet at age 12, he has played and soloed in numerous orchestras and bands in his native Missouri, where he studied with Scott Andrews of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Passionate about chamber music, Aleksis has performed the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, the Brahms Trio and Quintet, and Bartók “Contrasts”. Also an advocate of contemporary music, Aleksis performs in many new music concerts at the New England Conservatory. In the last few years, he has toured seven cities in China with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States, and performed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, with which he was the winner of their concerto competition. He has worked in orchestras under conductors such as David Robertson, Charles Dutoit, and Leonard Slatkin.
Pianist Patrick Pan is also a full-stack software developer and photographer. He’s passionate about web development, and about artificial intelligence and how it can be improved and inspired by the human brain, and music. Currently a senior at Harvard College studying Computer Science, Patrick is also joint-enrolled at the New England Conservatory, where he studies piano performance. As a high school student in Houston, TX, he was named one of 141 U.S. Presidential Scholars and was invited to the White House. He has also performed as a guest artist with the Houston Symphony, and was featured on National Public Radio’s From The Top.
