FOTL | The Friends of the Truro Library
As enthusiastic advocates for the Truro Public Library, the Friends of the Truro Library (FOTL) sponsors monthly programs on a variety of topics, with the objective of bringing people together for social interaction and learning. One of FOTL’s primary responsibilities is to support the decisions of the Board of Library Trustees. FOTL serves as an important link between the Library and the community. The organization often uses its influence to help the Library obtain financial support or to work actively for legislation that would be beneficial to the Library.
FOTL provides funding for special projects, items, and programs that are not covered by the Library budget. Fundraising is coordinated with the Library Director and with the knowledge and support of the Board of Library Trustees. “Books Down Under,” FOTL’s year-round used book store, is located on the lower level of the Library and sells books which are donated to the Friends from members of the community. FOTL also sells specialty items and is always on the alert for fundraising ideas.
FOTL was founded in the 1950s, when Truro was still a very small rural community. The two Truro libraries (Cobb Memorial Library in Truro Center in Pilgrim Memorial Library in North Truro) had just become part of the Massachusetts Library System. The library budget was minimal, and many improvements were needed. One of the first gifts made by FOTL to the library was telephones. Now, more than 50 years later, FOTL continues to provide discretionary funding and advocacy for the library.
