Robert Allison will address the creation of America’s constitution in the hot summer of 1787. Many recall Benjamin Franklin’s famous quip to anxious Philadelphians wanting to know what convention delegates “had given us.” “A republic, if you can keep it,” he replied.

Allison, along with fellow historian Bernard Bailyn, edited a remarkable collection of private letters, pamphlets, and newspapers that demonstrate the wide divisions at the time on a number of vexing questions unsettled to this day. As another historian states “democratic republics are not merely founded upon the consent of the people, they are also absolutely dependent upon the active and informed involvement of the people for their continued good health.”
