THE MAYWORKERS
By Gary Garrison
Texas, 1900. A rough-neck’s world. Oil country. Cowboys and their cattle. Sweet smellin’, soft-lovin’ women. The rule of this land was simple: Keep an eye towards God, and a hand towards family. Family was something you defended, lied for, suffered for and if you had to, die for. Nobody knew that better than Dayona Rose. As her mother passed away, Dayona was given the honor of Mayworker for her family – a group of women who tended the dead and cared for a family through their grief. To be a Mayworker was God’s work . . . until it wasn’t.
The Truro Playwright Collective is a group of established, local playwrights who present staged readings of their full-length works once a month from October through March.
